Pierogi (Polish Dumplings) RecipeIngredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup warm water
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups filling of choice (such as mashed potatoes, sauerkraut with mushrooms, cheese, or ground meat)
- 1/4 cup butter
- Optional toppings: caramelized onions, sour cream, or melted butter
Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
2. Make a well in the center and pour in the warm water and egg. Mix gradually until a smooth dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes elastic and slightly sticky.
4. Divide the dough into two portions, wrapping one in a clean cloth.
5. Roll out the first portion of dough until it becomes thin, about 1/8 inch thick.
6. Use a round cookie cutter or glass to cut out circles from the dough.
7. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each dough circle.
8. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape and pinch the edges tightly to seal the pierogi.
9. Repeat steps 5-8 with the remaining dough and filling.
10. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
11. Carefully drop the pierogi into the boiling water and cook until they float to the surface, about 2-3 minutes.
12. Remove the cooked pierogi with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a platter.
13. In a separate pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
14. Add the cooked pierogi to the pan and fry on each side until they turn golden brown.
15. Serve the pierogi hot, topping them with caramelized onions, sour cream, or melted butter, if desired.
Enjoy your homemade pierogi!
